SLENDER VILLE

New Urban Identities in Kampong Bharu

Three Winged Hollow Base.png

WHAT IS A SLENDER VILLE?

A Revolutionary Mixed-use Development

A Slender Ville is an unprecedented prototype building for the far future. It is essentially a smaller scale mega tower, a mini vertical city with amenities of a sub-city, a huge building complex that forms a micro society of its own.

It is part of a visionary master plan development for future developments.

WHY IS IT UNIQUE?

Conservation of City Identities

Conventional developments often take away the identity and essence of a place due to globalisation. Despite having diversity in a city, the wide range of cultures and lifestyles lead to heterogeneity which contributes to social isolation in urban areas. Social isolation experiences in cities are the signs of failure of human-centric urban planning. Hence, Slender Ville aims to conserve city identities, to enhance the intrinsic value of a city, and to also improve urban social interactions with a goal to reduce urban isolation.

It aims to reconnect people in within a city.

WHAT IS CITY IDENTITY?

A character that defines the city

The identity of a city is portrayed through the city skylines (first impressions) and on the ground floor (life experiences). The ground floor plays a major role in providing the real life experiences of being in a particular city. It is where we witness the daily activities of the locals, where we smell the fragrance of the local cuisine, where we feel the environment of the city, and where we interact with the people.

The ground is the key to recognising a city's identity.

Placemaking.png

HOW DOES IT WORK?

By giving back the ground floor to the public

Slender ville is a development that emphasises on minimal ground area impact. It has smaller building footprint compared to conventional skyscrapers as it conserves land by giving back the open spaces to the public to reconnect people. Slender village increases the ground floor value to the surrounding, further enhancing connectivity between neighbours. The building is more human-centric as it emphasises on human scale design through placemaking.

By emphasising on improving ground floor values, it will be able to redevelop historical or any sensitive sites, in the case of Kuala Lumpur, a site like Kampung Bharu.

SLENDER VILLE MASTER PLAN

Consolidation | Iconic Nodes | Land Conservation

The seven villages of Kampong Bharu shall be consolidated into tall sub-city towers. Each Slender Ville has a specialised function as indicated above: law & order, crafts, services, religious, people’s plaza, wisdom, and trades. The remaining buildable areas will be distributed to the surrounding as slender towers as shown in white squares. The rest of the lands shall be open for the public as the air rights of these lands will be transferred to the towers.

INTERIM 1

6th March 2020

Comments from the panel

Dr. Fakri Zaky

  1. Space Programming

    • The tower does not provide adequate number of residential units; initial provision was only 130 which was enough only for the existing lots of Kampung Atas “B”.

    • Despite having surrounding residential towers which may provide local residences, the main tower should provide slightly higher percentage of residential lots for a mixed development to function as it is intended to.

  2. Architectural Manifestation Poster

    • Too abstract and not able to describe the project’s theme in first glance.

      • In my opinion, an architectural poster may have the freedom to be abstract.

      • There are key words and illustrations shown on the posters that can be understood regardless of the abstractness of the poster.

  3. Drawings

    • Only basement, ground floor and podium plans provided, there was no tower plans.

    • Only schematic section provided, there was no elevation and proper section.

      • In my defense, due to the complexity and scale of my project, it takes more time to plan out the plausible layouts and to produce the drawings.

      • Hence in such a short time, it will be impossible for a master's student to be able to reach this stage in such a short time.

INTERIM 2

5th June 2020

Comments from the panels

Prof Ar. Cheah, Ar. Rushdina Ismail, Ar. Iznny Ismail

  1. Master Plan Strategies

    • Formation of Master Plan: more detailed explanation on how master plan was formed, include info graphics and diagrams

    • Consequences, aftermath & future projections: road access, traffic density

    • Construction process & procedures, how will citizens feel during the development stage by stage

  2. Identity

    • Lacks cultural context of Kampong Bharu and Kg Atas “B”.

      • Residential culture, eg: the daily actions of villages, chores, drying clothes, cooking, gathering, feasts

      • Street vendor culture, eg: pisang goring, street food

    • Should include collages of Kg Bharu community and activities

    • Show how my proposal can conserve or even enhance the identity of Kg Bharu.

      • How to portray the identity on the ground floor and vertical manner?

    • Visual identity

      • Kg Bharu skyline in relation with KL

      • Connection between ground and tower

  3. Building Elements

    • Too generic, proposal can be applied anywhere, lacks contextual character

    • What are the elements that I want the occupants to feel?

      • Scale of the surrounding; refer to Sky Ville, Dawson: building has 10 storey segments to replicate the experience of how Singaporeans use to live in within the height of 10 storeys HDB. Hence for Kg Bharu, 1 – 3 storeys feel within that area to be replicated into building.

      • List of Dos & Don’ts, restrictions, boundaries within a village

    • Type of social interaction spaces

      • Categorise them into live, work, play (leisure) spaces

      • Interaction between units to units, units to shops, shops to offices

    • Type of space connectors & separators

      • Tower segments: 15 – 30 levels

      • Local segments: 2 – 3 levels, split levels

  4. Definition of Slender Village

    • Redefine the meaning of village in modern day context

      • Definitions: Traditional Kampung vs Modern Kampung vs Future Kampung future

  5. Thesis Conclusion

    • In the end of the thesis, produce a profound suggestion regarding the current maximum plot ratio and given by DBKL.

Ar. Aznida

  1. Master Plan Strategies

    • Solutions on how to tackle the multiple land ownership issue should be shown in a form of business model scheme

    • Construction phases or step by step planning procedures of Master Plan implementation should be shown.

    • Provide more facts regarding Kampong Bharu land issues.

    • Ground level experience should show more life activities of Kampong Bharu.

    • Master plan should include urban synthesis, road changes, lot parcel changes & infrastructures.

FINAL

4th August 2020

Comments from the panels

Ar. Wooi, Ar. Hayazi

  1. By Ar. Hayazi

    • Too much attention on the master plan.

    • Lacks humanistic quality of spaces in the scheme.

    • Ground floor landscaping should be improved.

    • Lacks interior spaces.

  2. By Ar. Wooi

    • Very ambitious mega-structure as an outcome of an interesting investigation of the complex issues of Kampung Baru, with history deliberately erased.

    • Somehow the sense of human scale is lost among the towers, and no discernible urbanscape that is relatable to social activities.

    • The overall scheme would be even more provoking if it is resolved to the street level.
